JUST SO:WISHES ARE FISHES

WISHES ARE FISHES
By David Gewirtz, written in 1996

Choices are like voices that snear in your ear

Wishes are like fishes that swim up stream in your dream

I am the dictionary definition of bittersweet

I am the living incarnation of melancholy

I am as the poor servant serving two masters

I am as Washington with houses divided

I am overwhelmed with opportunities

I am cursed with constraints

I have the godlike power of a slug choosing to stay or to crawl

I want it all

What does it take to beat the snake

In the battle over Eden?

What's the fine line between dreams & reason?

When the impossible becomes mandatory

Is it for triumph or glory?

How far do we go when we hear the call?

I want it all

What is the measure of this thing called "love"?

From what perverse wellspring of emotion does it flow of?

Can we choose our loves & by what criteria?

Is it love, or is it hysteria?

In the end, I just don't know

But then again, I do.

I want it all.
