This is a photo of the Charles W. Morgan, docked at Mystic Seaport. It's amazing how something so beautiful could have engaged in such horrible crimes against nature. The Morgan is a whaling ship. Built in 1841 at the yard of Jethro and Zachariah Hillman in New Bedford, Massachusetts, she has outlived all others of her kind. This is just the sort of ship that would have Ahab as its captain. This image proved quite a challenge. While the day was nice, the clouds above the rigging were too dark. Yet removal of the clouds proved to be too difficult due to the complexity of the rigging. As a result, I opted for the digital equivalent of a very old photographer's trick. I dropped a gradient orange tone over portions of the image, in effect emulating the glass Colkin sunset filters of old. |
