BIO:SPEAKING TOPICS

One of my favorite activities is public speaking. If you're interested in scheduling me for a workshop or talk, just send me an email at david@ZATZ.com. Below is a list containing some of the topics I've done before.

David on writing

  • Writer's discipline: Many writers have a problem maintaining discipline. With more than 15 years experience motivating artists, programmers, and writers, David's session is an inspiring discussion with tips for getting started and staying motivated.

  • Writer's Q&A: Whenever you get a group of writers together, especially aspiring writers, questions abound. This session is an opportunity for writers to interact with someone who's been on both sides of the writer's market. The bulk of the session is made up of attendee questions, which David will answer and discuss. As with his other sessions, David will often bring other editors from his publishing company to the session to provide additional perspectives.

  • Writing for magazines: A great way to build a writing career is to write for magazines. As founder of five and Editor-in-Chief of seven magazines throughout his career, David can help you understand how magazines work, the publishing process, and how best to prepare your articles for publication. In addition, he can help you understand the daily life of an editor, so you can get an insider's perspective of what happens to your article after it has been submitted.

  • All about publishing: To a writer, writing is an art. But to a publisher, it's all business. If you want to succeed as a published author, it's important to understand how the publishing business works, from agents to contracts to distribution. As an author, David's seen all levels of the publishing business, from self-publishing, to publishing through a small house, to having a book published by a major publisher. And, as a magazine and software publisher, he's been on the other side, acquiring publication rights to numerous properties. If you want to really understand what makes the wheels of publishing turn, you owe it to yourself to attend this session.

  • The writer's life: Writing is often an interesting balance between triumph and tedium, excitement and exasperation. If you've just begun writing, fitting the craft into your life can be something of a challenge. After a while, however, all true writers integrate writing into their life. If you'd like to know more about how to make writing a pervasive part of your life, this session is for you.

  • 10 tips for budding writers: If you're just getting started on a writing career, there are some tricks of the trade that can make your life easier, improve the quality of your work, and increase your chances of getting published. In this session, author, editor, and publisher David Gewirtz takes you on a tour of 10 tips that'll help pave your way to writing success.

  • How to build a career as a writer: Many weekend writers dream of turning their writing into a career. While only a few will become the next Stephen King or J. K. Rowling, it is possible to craft a career where writing and editing are central parts of your life. In this session, editor, author, and publisher David Gewirtz talks about how he's made writing into a very profitable career and how you can, too.

Internet

  • The Internet and the future of magazine publishing: Despite all the hoopla over the dot-com crash, there is at least one area where the Internet provides a huge competitive advantage: magazine publishing. When done right, online magazines can outcompete their print brethren on the basis of cost, timeliness, depth, and circulation. This session will showcase just how powerful the Internet's impact can be on the magazine business and also show how it's possible to do it right.

  • How to (still) build a successful Internet business: Just because there were some spectacular failures doesn't mean you can't build a successful business online. You just have to be smart and remember that "successful business" comes before "Internet." If you want your business to succeed online, this session by successful (and profitable) Internet entrepreneur David Gewirtz can show you why you can succeed when others before you didn't.

  • Using the Internet as a strategic weapon: There have been so-called Internet companies -- and then there are companies that make use of the Internet. Your business can use the Internet to do way more than sell kitty-litter over the ether. You can use the Internet to improve communications, reduce costs, keep diverse teams connected and on track, work better with your customers and prospects, and sell more real-world products. In this session, David Gewirtz, who's written two books and published well over 200 articles on this topic, shows you how.

Entrepreneurship and running a company

  • The Flexible Enterprise: David's book, The Flexible Enterprise: How To Reinvent Your Company, Unlock Your Strengths, and Prosper in a Changing World was published back in 1996, but its lessons on business transformation are as valid today. In this session, David can help you learn how to transform your business -- and your life.

  • 10 tips for budding entrepreneurs: So you want to start your own company? Do you have any idea what you're getting yourself into? Are you prepared? In this incredibly useful, honest, and often funny session, serial entrepreneur David Gewirtz provides ten simple and powerful tips (and tools) for making it on your own.

  • Thriving in a down economy: Whether the economy's up or down, it's always possible to thrive. It's often a matter of how you think as much as what you do. In this amazing session, David Gewirtz not only shows you business techniques, but the deep, underlying ways in which the human brain processes information for success or failure.

  • The entrepreneur's life; what it's like to be an entrepreneur: Are you thinking about venturing out on your own? Many of us do. What's life really like as an entrepreneur? In this fun session, David Gewirtz shows you how you can structure your day, your month, and your life so you can both start a successful company as well as have a blast doing it!

Personal growth and motivation

  • How to thrive (not just survive) in a post-9/11 world: A recent Red Cross study shows that one in three New Yorkers are showing signs of post-traumatic stress disorder (and the number is rising). 43% expressed feelings of hopelessness and fear about the future. 31% feared the threat of terrorism or that more people could die while 22% worried about the safety and security of their families. In this world, we need new tools to thrive. This lecture provides some of those tools.

  • Hypnosis as a management tool (it's not what you think!): Hypnosis is a very powerful modality, but it comes with a pretty bad rap thanks to Hollywood. Hypnosis, used properly, can improve the quality of work and work life of your employees easily, quickly, and enjoyably. And no, you can't make them bark like a dog. Dr. David Gewirtz (a member of the American Board of Hypnotherapy) brings together his expertise in computer science, marketing, business management, and clinical hypnosis to provide an amazing insight into how hypnosis can push your company into hypergrowth.

  • The power of random reward: Positive reinforcement has long been proven to be a powerful motivator. But what if reward was random? What if, at any time, a person doing well might be rewarded for doing a good job? In The Power of Random Reward, David Gewirtz shows how students, employees, family members, and even athletes can be motivated to a whole new level through The Power of Random Reward.
