The Great Flood of Chitchen Itza
It was a dark and stormy afternoon as I and my fellow explorers came apon the great pyramid of Chitchen Itza, all but hidden below the waves. Lightning was everywhere, with strikes landing mere yards in front of us. It was almost as though the gods themselves wanted the pyramid to remain untouched. Undiscovered. Undisturbed...

Actually, it was a nice warm afternoon, and Chitchen Itza was pretty much mobbed with touristas. Other than the focal point of the picture of the pyramid, taken somewhat wide-angle and up close, there was nothing remarkable about the original picture. What you see above is nearly a complete fabrication. The trees and bushes to the right were moved and superimposed from another version of the image. The water, of course, is completely fake, as are the lightning strikes. What makes the image so interesting and, apparently so real, is that the reflections of the pyramid itself, the trees, and even the lightning strikes are mapped very carefully and realistically upon the ripples of the water.

For those of you who might be curious, here's what the original, unretouched (and uncropped) image of the pyramid looked like before I got to work on it:
